NEWS FLASH

Army Chief General VK Singh has taken the government to court over a dispute centred on his age.

General Singh argues that he was born in May 1951. Records with the Army show two different sets of dates: 1950 and 1951. The government has said that though it has no doubts about General Singh's integrity, the documents that it has to consider do not support his claim. "Rules are rules," said Law Minister Salman Khurshid last week. The General has said that he is concerned about "his honour and integrity" and not his tenure.

The government's view of the matter sees General Singh retiring at the end of May.
