| The Trinamool Congress has given the government 72 hours to withdraw its decision to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail and aviation, the hike in diesel prices and the restrictions on subsidised cooking gas or face the "consequences".
Trinamool's minister in Cabinet Mukul Roy has told the government that party chief Mamata Banerjee is furious and that their support shouldn't be taken for granted by the Congress. He is understood to have told the Congress leadership Ms Bannerjee was "serious" about this deadline.
The government today cleared 51% Foreign Direct Investment or FDI for multi-brand retail. The move will allow global firms such as Wal-Mart Stores to set up shop with a local partner and sell directly to consumers for the first time, though individual states have the right to reject the reform.
