| The Supreme Court cancelled Mumbai businessman Alistair Anthony Pareira's bail and upheld the verdict of the Bombay High Court, which had found Mr Pareira guilty of running seven people over under the influence of alcohol in Mumbai.
In November 2006, Mr Pareira, who was 21 years old then, lost control of his Toyota Corolla in suburban Mumbai and drove into a group of construction workers sleeping on the road. Seven people died, eight were injured.
Mr Pareira was initially sentenced to six months in jail by a Mumbai court; this provoked much criticism. The Bombay High Court then intervened and enhanced the jail term to three years, convicting Mr Pareira of unintentional killing. | |
