Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said he has no issues with the military's latest statement warning him of "serious consequences" as Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had sought his permission before issuing it.

Mr Gilani's clarification came a few hours after Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement warned the Prime Minister that his recent remarks against General Kayani would have "serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country." Mr. Gilani had accused Gen. Kayani and Lt. Gen. Ahmad Shuja Pasha, the head of Pakistan's intelligence service, of acting as "state within a state" and reminded them they were accountable to the Parliament. Those comments were made in connection with the Memogate scandal that has severely strained ties between the civilian government and the military of late.

Mr Gilani had, in response to the Army's statement, immediately sacked the country's Defence Secretary Naeem Khalid Lodhi and replaced the former general with a civilian aide, Nargis Sethi.
